Unthatile Mathonsi

Unthatile Hope Mathonsi is a Lighthouse Law Academy student and an LLB graduate from the University of the Western Cape, having completed her degree in 2025.

During her undergraduate studies she worked at the UWC Law Clinic, and through this experience she gained practical exposure in assisting clients and developing skills in legal research and drafting, problem-solving, and client service.

Unthatile is deeply passionate about community engagement and leadership and has been actively involved in initiatives such as UWC Street Law, the Mamelodi Initiative, and the Advanced Leaders Program, where she worked closely with diverse communities, using education, mentorship, and service to make the law more accessible and meaningful. She has been a mentee for the South African International Association of Women Judges, where she gained exposure to the SA legal system through observing legal proceedings. She also engaged with and received mentoring from esteemed members of the judiciary.

Unthatile is particularly interested in how AI and legal technology will contribute to shaping the future of legal practice. She is very excited to grow within the Lighthouse Law Academy while contributing to innovative, inclusive, and forward-thinking legal work and bringing a strong work ethic and eagerness to learn.

Outside of work and academics Unthatile enjoys going on walks, hiking, reading and spending time with her loved ones. She also has a newfound passion for graphic design and digital arts which she hopes to cultivate further through time and practice.
